I paced myself with this one purely because of how “eventful” (for lack of a better word, without offering spoilers) her life was. The book captured her determination so well and left me marvelled at how in my lifetime things can be so different within the world.

I genuinely don't have any words for how moving this book was. I have never been more grateful to live the life I live. I have so much respect for this woman and so much sorrow for the people of North Korea.

I'd  put off reading this for a long time. I saw a speech she gave talking about being trafficked and seeing her mother r@ped. While it is a difficult read, and she doesn't shy away from the atrocities of her childhood, she does it in a very tactful way. She acknowledges what happened, but doesn't go into too much detail. She does paint a clear picture of her life in North Korea, China, and South Korea. Her drive for knowledge and her positive outlook (especially despite her circumstances) is truly inspiring.

Wow. If I needed another reminder of how lucky I was to be born in the US, this was it. All the politicians and celebrities making ignorant comments right now about how "[this] isn’t about your freedom": it's always, always about freedom. Here’s why.
