This is fun: a ragtag group of goblin soldiers get separated from the battlefield and befriend an elven veterinarian just in time to solve a nearby mystery. The characters are very colourful and full of the humour we’re used to from T. Kingfisher (and in true Kingfisher style the mystery takes a very dark turn). I wish there were more short stories about the Nineteenth Infantry and/or Sings-to-Trees as they all certainly were very likeable characters!

Reads like a lost Pratchett story

If someone had told me this was a recently discovered lost story from Terry Pratchett, I'd immediately believe them. This delightful tale of a lost regiment of goblins and an elf veterinarian also manages some sharp satire about war and its innocent contenders.

I always love reading this author. She writes in this really lighthearted, but quite funny way and her stories are always inversions or something like it a fairy tales or other folklore. She always makes you think about the roles that everyone is destined to play in the story. Case in point – this book. There are goblins and elves, but one is not good and one is not bad. They are both good and bad depending on the individual. Definitely recommend!
