ohhh wow… yeah i can’t say i expected that ending! i really enjoyed reading this book, i got hooked quickly and finished it quickly. the way the author focused on certain small details was so intriguing to me. it’s small, but i loved the way that at the beginning, when they were still hesitantly exploring the castle and wondering what to do next, alex kept pausing at the windows and noticing that they didn’t open.
one thing that disappointed me is that i thought this was overall going to be a lot more creepy and mysterious and went in expecting an actual vampire story and like creepy, old castle, so the actual setting (that unfolded in my mind as a lot more modern) and then of course the events and plot were disappointing. the theme that i felt was promised from the cover, summary, back of the book, etc didn’t end up actually being the theme, but i still ended up enjoying the book … maybe i just wish the setting and events were a tiny bit more fantastical (mostly in terms of the setting) but the only reason i really do is because of the ideas and expectations that had already been planted in my head by everything else about this book and especially the first chapter. the way the first chapter framed the events of the rest of the story really had me convinced it would be all fantastical and about vampires and evil, but then it wasn’t …
the ending is not only interesting and unexpected (for me), but it was also foreshadowed well—in a way that didn’t seem like foreshadowing, but that you could piece together later and that may have stuck out as slight discrepancies at first until they all fell together. i did think, when i was nearing the conclusion of the plot, that i was sort of confused by the plot and the explanation for what was happening, but of course that was all cleared up later. unreliable characters are so interesting to me. great book!!

Super disappointed in this. The writing was just bad and the plot was convoluted.

This was an enjoyable, quick read. I read it in 2 sittings. That being said, I didn’t really like any of the characters and also thought they made alllll the wrong choices. It was frustrating and I found their behavior not realistic or believable. Communicate people!
Some of the phrasing was a bit repetitive and the timeline was also not the clearest with the nights spent in the castle running together. If you’re looking for paranormal activity or actual vampires this is not the book for you. There was never any real moment where characters considered that it was not a person after them. Lastly, the book tried to make a comment about women’s place in film which I think could have been handled a little better.

I really wanted this to be in the unpopular opinion shelf but alas... it was not that good. after reading Eat Your Heart Out and rating it 5 stars, I assumed I would love this just as much. the description is so promising but the execution is just not it. for one, since EYHO is so hilarious I assumed this would be at least a little funny with our cast of characters but unfortunately there is 0 funny in this entire book. not even like a snarky remark come on. by the time we got to the end of the book and everything was revealed I just did not care anymore and it did not have the impact it should have.
