This book reminded me of an essay written by a high school student who used their thesaurus to make themselves sound smarter. Instead of being impressed, I was annoyed by all of the random words I had to look up. I know some of them are supposed to be “old-timey,” but some of those terms were just odd and seemed out of place given the type of fiction this was.
Anyway, the story was intriguing enough. I found myself hanging at the edge of my seat at moments, but I never was surprised by the twists. We don’t really get to know the main characters like we should, seeing as how the ending flopped for me. Okay, he’s upset that his daughter didn’t come back for him, but he left her when she was four. Abigail’s silly defense of him at the end left me annoyed.
I think this author is pretty adept and weaving a story that blends together well, but isn’t good at developing characters or their relationships.

2.5 Stars. The beginning of the book held promise, and the plot line was interesting. It held my attention for about the first half.
After reading one unfortunate circumstance after another, after another, and another, and another on and on for eternity, I just wanted it to be over.
If shorter, and sans several storylines, it would have worked for me.

3.5 so far the least impressive Blake Crouch work I've read imo
Absolutely phenomenal. The narrative is captivating and spellbinding.
good but doesn't stand up at all compared to Crouch's later efforts. the writing is simplistic, characterisation largely missing. picks up in the last third as things come to a head and I gotta give props to the almost entirely bummer of an ending - especially one particularly fucked up twist when things seem to look up for one character. gotta revisit Dark Matter and Recursion (one of my fave books) sometime.
I lost a lot of sleep because of this book. It's a good thing I read it over a weekend. This chilling cat-and-mouse thriller gives new meaning to the phrase "history repeats itself". Abandon is a wild ride through the streets of an abandoned mining town and, once you start it, I dare you to put it down.
Hard to get into, with a lot of characters and threads, but it grew on me
