Hard to get into, with a lot of characters and threads, but it grew on me
Overall great novel. Not quite horror, not quite thriller. It was an interesting story about the evils of greed and humans(all the bad that came from the search for the lost gold and whatnot). I liked it.

This was a ride. It was simultaneously slow and fast. There were a lot of characters so that was sometimes hard to keep track who was who. I’m honestly not sure it if I even enjoyed this book, but that seems to be the case with every Blake Crouch book because he tends to focus on themes that make his books depressing.

I loved the premise and the setting. Overall it was well written and was a page turner. However, I thought the scene with the sheriff at the end was a bit contrived. I feel like I have I seen that scenario a thousand times where the heroin thinks she's out of danger only to realize her savior is really a bad guy who has now drugged her. A bit too cliche for me.
I also wonder about the historical accuracy of some things. First, were there even any hostile Indians left in Colorado in 1893? That's 3 years after Wounded Knee. Second the use of the "f bomb" was really distracting in the scenes set in the past. It didn't ring true to the era.
Worth the read, but not high literature by any measure.
