The concept is really interesting in this, but I didn’t find the voice very compelling, nor the lack of a plot, really. I’m not sure the themes best fit into the form of a novel, really. It could be an interesting article. The complicity of the narrator with propaganda in-line with the patriotism of the day seems a foregone conclusion.

The only interesting aspects were the reactions of various people with the narrator, who has coloured their memory heavily, if other characters are to be believed. And the ultimate accountability of people complicit in propaganda and patriotism, etc. when focused on that, was the only time I found this engaging. All the interesting questions this prompts, again, I think, could benefit heavily from a shorter form format.

I forgot that I read this book! I'm actually really pissed that I forgot because now I can't even say anything about it because I don't remember what happens. The only thing I remember is our class's awesome discussion on it! Whelp!

This one might grow on me, if I take the time to learn more about it. There are parts that resonate with me. And Ishiguro's writing is always quite beautiful. But this one does not occupy the place in my heart that [b:The Remains of the Day|28921|The Remains of the Day|Kazuo Ishiguro|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1327128714l/28921._SY75_.jpg|3333111] and, especially, [b:Never Let Me Go|6572790|Never Let Me Go|Kazuo Ishiguro|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1372716017l/6572790._SY75_.jpg|1499998] occupy. If you're new to Ishiguro, I'd recommend either of those over this one. Or try his stories. I found [b:Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall|4772110|Nocturnes Five Stories of Music and Nightfall|Kazuo Ishiguro|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1320430211l/4772110._SY75_.jpg|4836931] quite good.

Noting here that the 2016 anniversary edition introduction that I found online added very good context to this book. Fuck me up narrative style maybe Thatchers England was the Japanese imperialism novel we met along the way? Insane in a lot of ways. Having him write this at the age he did and making it about, weirdly ambition? Hit me in a very specific way. Damn

- a book about an old person that actually feels like reading an old person's mind

- really interesting insight into (old) Japanese culture and traditions, as well as its post-war situation

- kinda poetic, the plot-twists are subtle but interesting
