On top of everything else that I enjoy about Louise Penny's Gamache mysteries - making me feel as if I am actually there and that I know each and every one of the residents of Three Pines - I find myself sitting down at each read with a plateful of something yummy (and healthy) because of her descriptions of the scrumptious meals at Gabri's and Ovlvier's B&B. Ah, to be a guest there for a long weekend…
Smitten with these stories, I have just reserved a copy of #4, A Rule Against Murder!

I couldn't finish this book after too many references to Myrna -- the series' thus far's only nonwhite character -- in stereotypical terms. An interesting review of this tendency of most of Penny's series here: https://gykendall1.medium.com/myrna-the-mammy-louise-pennys-american-dream-b12d8cee41d2
I started this series with later books, and loved them. I went back to the original books in the series, and was so disappointed in the quality. Its like they were written by a different author. So I wondered when I would recognize the Louise Penny who wrote this later books I loved. I am happy to say that happened in this book, third in the Armand Gamache series. Not up to the quality of the best of the best, but still a really good mystery filled with charm and life and Gamache-ness. I would say this is a 3.5. Fun read!
LOVE LOVE LOVE. I love Armand, I love the setting and characters and I love the story. This is a great new murder mystery series.
Good to visit Three Pines again. The downtown sure is compelling. But man, how can people move there. It's gotta be the murder capital of Quebec.
These are fast becoming some of my favorite books! Gamache is (well, Louise Penny is) smart, funny, shrewd, charming...everything you would want in a Chief Inspector. I highly recommend this series. The Cruelest Month is a good whodunit; Madeleine is "scared to death" at a seance, but of course, she is really murdered. CI Gamache has to figure out who, all the while being spied upon and attacked in the papers by an enemy.
