I didn't even read the comics where Venom first appears, and I still feel that retelling his origin is tiresome. Attempting to cram everything, including backstory, into a single arc makes for bad pacing, and the intro drags while the finale rushes. That said, retelling gives the opportunity to highlight specific elements, and this has two things to say: First, that pre-Venom Eddie is awful--and while I appreciate the insistence and lack of forgiveness, it's still unpleasant to read. Second, as horrible the character is, however irrational and selfish his behavior, his bond with the symbiont is an active choice. It's informed, consenting--and complicated, and intimate, and powerfully intriguing. The art follows similar lines, from gross fisheye closeups of Eddie to the dynamic, unsettling illustrations of Venom (questionable anatomy, as always, excepted). What a mess! but upon occasion a beautiful mess: despite its own best efforts, the middle of this is some of the more rewarding Venom material.

'This world is hard and cold and sharp...and now so am I.'
Admitted not a fan of Medina's art style (nor the colouring), but Eddie's moral greyness coupled with a sense of justice keeps him interesting. He is a complex character, with a solid and sympathetic backstory which admits human weakness, mistakes and ineptitude, and the pitiless harshness of circumstance, and one man's confrontation with that unpredictable terrain otherwise blandly called 'life'. It is that beguiling combination of darkness and light - and, fascinatingly, how he gives in but also pulls back from that temptation- that allows this reader to root for him. It ends on a defeated and yet touching note.

Now that I've read a few more Venom comics, I can come back to this one and safely say that it's objectively ugly - the art style doesn't work for me and the dark tone just doesn't cut it.
Between their origin as Spiderman villain and their current anti-hero status, Eddie and the symbiote go through a lot of character growth, but this revisiting of their origin just feels gratuitously ugly (and contradicts stuff established in other story lines)

Story: 3
Art: 4
The story itself was pretty enjoyable, not as deep as I would've preferred it to, but not bad either.
The art, however, really made it for me.

definitely twisted with enough body horror thrown in to deter those with weaker stomachs but it was an okay read either way.

Nothing redeeming about Eddie as a character. The plot wasn't all that interesting and it felt a bit rushed.

Resmen sinirlerim bozuldu.
Beğenmedim. 2018 versiyonunu daha okumadan önerebilirim. Bundan daha kötü kesinlikle olamaz.
Sana "bb" Dark Origin.
