I would probably give it a 3.5. I loved the characters, the time the book was set in (1930's - Great Depression) , I loved following the stories. I enjoyed it but it wasn't enough for me. I also like more romance, but now I want to read more in the Great Depression.

I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Kristin Hannah once again delivers a beautiful book that captures you straight away. It’s a heartbreaking tale of prejudice and overcoming in the midst of blow after blow of pain and suffering. Elsa is a force to be reckoned with as she endures with hidden inner strength and determination.
The book is a sad one and isn’t a read for a sunny afternoon but if your heart is ready to listen to a tale of pain , loss , love and overcoming in the hardest of times this dust bowl era book is the one for you!

Thank you to the publisher for my ARC.

What I Did Like:
-Well researched. I’m sure there was no real Elsa Martinelli. But I don’t doubt that there were women LIKE her that lived through these times. The book feels real and raw, it feels possible and terrifying. It feels important to bring these stories to life.
-Big lessons. Like a lot of Kristin Hannah’s previous books, this one is packed with lessons you can draw from the character’s lives. Some of them are laid out for you (like this one about speaking up) but others are buried deeper (like the one here about seeing your true self). Either way, the book is packed with lessons ready for you to draw into your own life.
-Characters. Hannah has a way of creating characters that will feel so real to you that you will hurt when they hurt. In this book that is particularly painful, since this book is about dragging a character through the worst years of their life. It's a masterful creation of emotion and character, even when it hurts.

Who Should Read This One:
-Anyone interested in the Great Depression era. The book is well researched.
-Fans of Kristin Hannah’s previous historical fiction will not be disappointed.

My Rating: 4 Stars. Strong characters and solid research make this a historical fiction novel fans of the genre will love.
