Too many characters decended into outright caricature, the ultimate shallowness of their entire personality consisting of a single trope.
The writing is pretty amazing, no question, but the actual story being told, despite happening in quite a complex environment, is ultimately very shallow. Its width over depth, dressed up with elaborate language.

Alex Stern may have a plan and on paper it may seem to only have a few steps… find a gateway to the underworld and steal a soul. Simple right? However in reality very few can make the journey in the first place let alone return from it. The difference between others who have tried and failed is that Alex is determined to save her friend. With her mission being forbidden calling upon the Ninth House is out of the question leaving Alex and Dawes on their own. Together, they begin to uncover even more secrets, artifacts, and arcane texts. As members of the faculty begin dying, Alex knows that something truly sinister is at play. There are no accidents in the dark side of Yale.

I’m sold. I am now forever a fan of Leigh Bardugo because again I’m simply obsessed with this paranormal dark academia world she has created. The tension kicks off very early on in the prologue which really sets the tone for the entire book. I truly cannot get enough of this perfectly crafted blend of mystery and historical elements along with all the supernatural aspects. The historical details of Yale are so well done and I greatly appreciate the time the author took to ensure these accuracies. Alex as an FMC has no problem showing how badass she is in the sequel, add in Dawes and these two were an unstoppable duo. I could not stop turning the pages to watch them at work. I also enjoyed seeing Alex‘s growth and openness to friendships. To see her letting herself be cared for by others as well as caring for herself made me incredibly happy. And without a doubt I’m a full blown fan girl of Darlington! I’d say more on my obsession with the man but fear I’d give too much away. Just know I’d jump over any hurdles for the man and love him. My only disappointment is in the fact that the next book isn’t out yet and now I have a hole in my soul where it should be because I can’t wait for the next book!

I have more questions at the end of this book than I had at the start. I may just not have been paying enough attention, but there was a lot of things going on that I did just not understand, which contributed to the low rating. I like the characters and the setting, but just like in the first book did I find it hard to understand why they couldn't just leave Darlington in hell? I didn't feel a strong enough connection to him to justify going through all of the stuff they did to bring him back.
