A quick read! Good writing. I loved the quotes from the actual fairy tales at the beginning of each chapter!
I feel like this is a 4.5 star book but I really loved the combination of all of the fairy tales to tell the story. A great and easy read!
What a cute YA book! It is a quick read and perfect for young audiences. I love the references to a variety of fairytales, even though many are lesser knows ones. I also love all the shoe quotes throughout it. This book really shows that the author was dedicated and did a lot of research! The adventure is fun and unique and you never know what they are going to encounter next! I love how you start by not believing in magic and by the end you are waiting for and expecting magic to happen! Great book for kids who like fairytales and fantasy. The main character is great, loyal and humble but also relatable. And for once I was actually happy with the ending and felt satisfied with it!
Great take on several different lesser known fairy tales. I loved how Flinn patched together several different stories to create this very unique and entertaining story.
Cute, fun story. Not my favorite of Alex's books but still a good read.
Meh - 2.5 stars
This book contains mashup of fairy tale retellings including "The Elves and the Shoemaker," "The Frog Prince," "The Six Swans," "The Golden Bird," and "The Brave Little Tailor." It's a light, quick read, that's supposed to be funny, but the humor didn't come across for me.
Johnny who works at his family's shoe repair shop, is chosen by the beautiful princess Victoriana, to go on a quest to rescue her brother who has been turned into a frog by an evil witch. If he triumphs, he is to be rewarded with the princess' hand in marriage. Shenanigans ensue. He realizes that he's in love with his best friend, the girl next door. Blah, blah, blah.
I think teen girls looking for a quick escape into a cheesy fantastical world will enjoy this. If that's not you, don't bother.

This is an adventure romance made from a mashup of fairy tales, with witches and princes and princesses, set in South Florida. I wish I liked it more, it sounds right up my alley. But it's written in a dumbed down way and things don't develop naturally...there is a lot of POOF THEN THIS HAPPENED! Also it was an odd choice to make the normal boy the protagonist--probably would have been more fun from the witch or princesses' pov. I think it's targeted to teens but a bit too simple. Better for tweens.
Cloaked is a delightful and whimsical fairy tale retelling that offers a refreshing take on a classic genre. While it may not be groundbreaking in terms of plot or character development, it's a charming and entertaining read that's perfect for those looking for a lighthearted escape.
The protagonist, Johnny, is a lovable and relatable character with a unique perspective on the world. His self-deprecating humor and innocent nature add a touch of charm to the story. The author's ability to incorporate familiar fairy tale elements in unexpected ways is both clever and entertaining.
If you're looking for a fun and lighthearted read that doesn't require deep analysis or complex plotlines, Cloaked is a perfect choice. Just relax, enjoy the ride, and let yourself be swept away by the magic of this charming fairy tale retelling.
