Just finished this. The themes are timely, at least for me, and I have to wonder what kind of childhood Cashore had, because the way she wrote Lovisa was very relatable to me and I have to imagine she suffered too in order to write it so well. The themes of over coming trauma, making hard decisions, trust, and environmentalism are all very dear to me, and Cashore did them justice. I listened to a podcast she was on and apparently sheโs working in a follow up novel following Hava, which I canโt wait to read.
I really loved Graceling, and I think this book fit well in that world. Iโd really give this 3.5. I thought it seemed to drag just a little.

I was nervous about the start of this one; it is much slower and harsher (dealing with a lot of child abuse - in a way that feels a LOT more personal than Leck's general abuse of everyone and everything), and I wasn't sure I was going to like Lovisa very much. I did, though.
Also, I love Quona.

Spoiler
I knew anyone with that many cats couldn't actually be that terrible. She's just weird and awkward and cares a lot. Amazing.
