Winterkeep is very different from the rest of the series, taking on an almost darker and more adult tone as it raises the stakes for poor Bitterblue and Monsea. The book is at once a fun and harrowing read, with telepathic foxes and parental abuse and a horrible secret that could change the world as everyone knows it. There are moments of humor, friendship, and love interwoven with the politics and betrayal, and I’m interested to see where Cashore goes next with Seasparrow.

the setting is such a copy of the his mortal Instruments series! also the sea creatures and their lore reminded me A LOT of Robin Hobb's Liveship Traders series. I'm curious why Cashore went for this... with the other installments of this series her imagination was quite sufficient by itself. I do think she has great ideas and let some of them shine in this book as well. but the execution didn't go as well as previous books in my opinion, it was too long and too much of a mystery, not enough of a fantasy novel.
Also: everyone had a lot of sex in this which is great and refreshing on one hand but also seemed a bit much, especially all the sleeping around for the 16 year old students - I mean not unrealistic but the way they all had casual sex seemed a bit too much? monogamy and puppy love seemed not to exist in this school, lol?
Some plot points seemed to be there for creating shock value, some plots were left entirely unresolved (maybe to be picked up in following novels?), some relationships from previous books were downright broken up with a oneliner. Which is sad if that were the ones you shipped. Also a questionable age gap relationship was never addressed as such and it does not sit perfectly right with me.

So overall, I have mixed feelings about Winterkeep. Not what I expected, but it was interesting at times. I do have the next book in the series, so I will continue at some point - but not too soon I'd reckon.

Winterkeep may have just become my favorite book in the Graceling series! Kristin Cashore takes readers on a thrilling new journey, introducing a variety of fresh characters and exploring a whole new continent, which kept the story feeling fresh and exciting.

The multiple POVs were a standout element for me. Getting into the minds of several characters added so much depth to the narrative, and it was fascinating to see how each one interacted with the world around them. The pacing was spot on, with plenty of intrigue and tension that kept me turning pages.

I loved the expansion of the Graceling world in Winterkeep. There’s so much more to discover, and the introduction of new characters added another layer of complexity to the story. Cashore has done a fantastic job of building on the existing world while keeping things engaging and unpredictable.

If you're a fan of the series, you won't want to miss Winterkeep. It's a compelling mix of adventure, emotional depth, and new perspectives that will keep you hooked from start to finish!

Finns det en bättre bokserie? Nä jag skulle inte tro det.
