This book started out strong, and I loved the premise - the idea of multiple children sharing one identity in a One Child Only society was something I had only ever seen in "What Happened to Monday?".

However, once our main characters were found out, it fell flat. Their escape almost seemed too easy. The idea that they could escape across multiple states with little more than hair dye and makeup left me underwhelmed, especially considering the technology displayed at the beginning. In moments that should have been tense, I just couldn't muster up the ability to care.

There wasn't enough world building or understanding of the girls inner thoughts for me to be excited about the idea of them leading a rebellion in book two, so I'll probably give it a pass.

Credit for intriguing new world

The Role of One was a free kindle book for me. I loved the description of the society. Taking all the worst ideas for society, isolationism extending to states and cities, no guns for citizens, complete loss of individual privacy and adding China's one child policy drew me in. I will say that my 3 stars are mostly for originality. Execution would be a one star. The authors a did Not give us time to understand the characters before moving the plot along. And the plot was essentially danger, fortuitous plot device to help escape, on the run, rinse and repeat. I have no idea why the bad guys were bad. And I cannot really tell you much about Ava and Mira as separate entities. All of this can be fixed but I'm not sold that I will read a second book in this series.

Would round up to 3⭐

I really enjoyed the beginning and ending of this book. I felt for the characters.

But the plot holes were CRAZYYY and the middle of the book was really a drag.

Mira Goodwin is not supposed to exist ... and to everyone aside from her father and twin sister Ava, she doesn't. The Goodwin family live in a future America devastated by climate change, making a one child policy necessary to ensure the survival of the world's population. This is why Mira has to live hidden in the basement of their family home, switching places with her twin every other day, remaining identical down to the tiniest detail. But what happens when one of the twins makes a fatal mistake and their cover-up is discovered? How can they both survive in a world designed for one?

Debut novel The Rule of One, the first in trilogy, is written by actual twin sisters, Ashley & Leslie Saunders. This heart-pounding dystopian tale is a solid entry into the genre, and interestingly enough, explores many themes that have arisen with the current COVID-19 crisis, including government overstep and control. The premise of twins seamlessly switching places day after day to survive in a world that claims they don't even exist is an intriguing one, and I was on the edge of my seat, waiting to discover how they would slip up and be revealed. After their discovery, the book becomes less psychological and more action-packed, as the twins trek off into the great unknown, making this a novel that will appeal to girls and boys alike.

I love a speculative YA novel and this one delivered. I had a little trouble following the alternating narrators—they weren’t distinct enough for me—but not enough to stop. The plot is great while there were a few places where the pacing lagged I recommend it to anyone who loved The Giver.

Amazing

I absolutely loved this book! I was kept on the edge of my seat as it was really well written. I fell in love with Ava and Mira and how they discovered themselves. There were so many odds against them but they still went on and survived.
