I cannot understand the rave reviews of this book.
Was not invested in a single aspect & was eager for it to end.

This is in the running for my favorite book of the year! And I've read a lot of good books this year!
Hartnett perfectly blended comedy and tragedy in a way I've never seen before. I would be crying, then turn the page and start laughing out loud. Everything that happened in this story was just ridiculous enough to be realistic. Lyss and I are still talking about different little details we enjoyed, like holding the clothes up to the phone for the psychic to smell or the rats trying to escape steerage.
I really enjoyed the magical realism element. If you want to be boring, you can choose to believe that there's a rational explanation for everything in the book. If you're fun, you believe Emma brought the bird back to life and the ghosts helped guide that last falling spotlight.
I've never read such an accurate description of how absurd it can be to be a young teacher. How much learning actually happened in Emma's class? Who knows. Mack's students hooting and hollering at the spaghetti dinner was incredible.
In the words of my favorite coworker Al: "If you can write a funny book about dementia, you know you're a good writer!" Very excited to read the rest of Hartnett's books!!

Annie Hartnett is a new insta-buy author for me! This book contained so much compassion for its characters, but did not shy away from the tragedies everyday people experience. This was full of heart and magic and all of the characters were so loveable, even with their flaws. Can't wait to read more from this author!
