This was one of my favorite movies in my early teens, but reading the book in my adulthood was very underwhelming.
Super flowery language to the point it gets in the way of the storytelling. Astrid is preternaturally insightful and mature, reads every adult around her with perfect cynicism even when she was supposed to be super young and not tough yet.
What character development there is, happens in big lurches that don't feel realistic.
The last 10% of the book fucking slapped though.
Also lot of weird low key racism/weird damaging stereotypes to how she portrays people of color.
Also a huge obsession with white, blond, paleness, Nordic heritage that's giving ~white supremacy~ vibes and I don't think it was meant to? Or maybe it was? Unclear.

Ugh the problem with books (especially ones that make me feel/think as much as this one did) is that my thoughts escape me as fast as they came to me on the page! The themes of a dysfunctional mother daughter relationship, but also of friendship and connection was all too relatable here. This book was a rollercoaster, some parts were page turners and others beckoned more of a reflection on the themes I mentioned, which I wasn’t mad about and definitely took my time.
5 stars overall due to my subjective connection to the characters but the poetry in this book is another reason to read. This was a Libby download but I will be buying a copy!

For such a short book it was a little hard to get through, and not necessarily because of the story. The writing style wasn't for me but I appreciate what the book had to say overall.
