-The Guardian

As many other reviews mentioned, it took me awhile to get into this book. With all the meandering, it was challenging to get to know the characters and invest in the story, and despite the many sad events these boys went through, I felt surprisingly disconnected and unemotional. For a long while I just wanted it to be over. Now that I've finished I do appreciate the beauty of the story, and I think this is one I may re-visit at some point in the future.

Just dull. Wasn’t getting excited to see how stories melded together. Overuse of short sentences for stylistics and pacing drive me mad. Stopped at 70%.

I wanted to like this. I went to sleep after finishing the book and woke up disappointed that I still feel that I didn't like it. Is a one star rating for a book that is technically well-written too harsh? Going by Goodreads' rating scale of 1 star being equal to a "did not like it" rating, I guess my rating is justified.

Bridge of Clay is more than a story about physically building a bridge, it's also about the metaphor of the character Clay building bridges between (mainly) his family. Clay is among what Zusak describes as feral brothers living in a home without both parents. The story oscillates between different points in time: past, present and future. We learn of a man who becomes known as a murderer although he hasn't killed anyone, several family pets and how they came to join the family, the story of a mother's immigration and devastating and slow demise, and a fair bit about running and horse racing.

Zusak, in Bridge of Clay, is sentimental and succeeds at evoking some complex emotions, particularly with his commentary on death. But the success is few and far in between, and the story hardly provides a reason to feel connected to the characters and their journeys. Unfortunately I can't say that I enjoyed Zusak's latest work, but I have an appreciation for what kind of novel I think he intended to write although he fell short.
