I adore Markus Zusak and really wanted to love this. He spent 14 years writing it and in that time it was the only story he had in him to tell. It's very poetic like his other books. But it didn't move me. I'm sad i didn't love it. I'm probably being generous giving it that 4th star. I think it's for the author rather than the book.
SO SO GOOD!!! Zusak’s writing is deep and beautiful and emotional! Loved it from beginning to end!

I couldn't finish it, I just couldn't stomach the writing:
All the short sentences.
Metaphors like sandwiches in the sun.
The round-aboutness of describing whatever was going on.
So I gave up at 15%.

At first I didn't think I would finish this one; the story didn't hold me and the writing seemed choppy and hard to follow. Then something clicked, and I couldn't put it down. I'm glad I kept going; it was worth it.
This book broke my heart ❤. Wonderful and beautifully told.

This was the hardest book I have ever read. It is a testament to the story that I actually finished it. Some beautiful writing hidden behind unfinished sentences and bouncing through time. So confusing. So irritating. But a beautiful story.
