Anyone who says this book is anything less than incredible is wrong.
I loved loved loved The Book Thief from start to finish. So I was quite excited about this book. And I found it a bit more difficult to dig in. But in the end I found myself really loving it. A truly beautiful story. It just took a bit to get there. Sean Hewitt of the Irish Times wrote a review where he notes:
“This sense of trying to intrigue the reader, to draw them through the narrative, begins to feel like a prolonged delay of information, and risks losing us before the stories of Zusak’s novel begin to fall into place. Delayed gratification, in fact, is quite typical of Bridge of Clay, which on occasion falls into place in spectacular style and effect, bringing Zusak’s masterly skill for characterisation to the fore. Sometimes tedious, at other times masterful, this isn’t a novel destined for the success that met The Book Thief, though, if you have the patience, it’s worth sticking around for. “ (https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/books/bridge-of-clay-review-slow-paced-novel-is-both-masterful-and-tedious-1.3655810?mode=amp)
This is exactly what I thought. It could be tedious at times but if you have the time, Zusak is a master of weaving a good story.

So...I really love Zusak's earlier books, but this one didn't quite do it for me. I had a hard time getting into the story until about halfway through, and then I just kept waiting for it to be over. There were moments of true beauty and amazing depth of understanding of humanity, but I just didn't love it. I probably would've stopped reading had it not been a Markus Zusak book.
A heartbreaking lovely story about a family, first loves, and the stories families tell. It takes a minute to get into it because it assumes knowledge you don't yet have, but as you slowly learn all the stories of the Dunbars everything makes sense in the end. Beautifully written. I found the male-ness of it a little tiring at times, but that's part of it, so its hard to fault it for it. Also, Achilles the mule is my favorite.
Beautifully written! Took me a little bit to get into it but once I was, I could not stop. I listen to it and it is narrated by Markus Zusak and it was absolutely wonderful.
Reading previous reviews of this book I really recommend people stick with it. I really struggled to get into the characters until about 35% but after that I was completed absorbed. Definitely one to save for when you have the time to devote to it.
So many people will described the merits of this book so I will just say:
The book was so beautiful that I think about it often and it will remain a story I reminisce about until I’m old.
That’s it. That’s the review.

Once again I tried to start this book and only got a few chapters in before I decided I had better ways to spend my time. I understand that isn’t a fair review. Maybe it’s because the author was reading and he should have left it to a professional reader? Either way - I’ve given it a go twice, but never really got started.
I rarely don't finish a book, but the last two that I haven't finished are by male Australian authors. I loved the Book Thief, but Bridge of Clay was a world I just couldn't get interested in (same for Boy Swallows Universe).
