This book broke my heart and then slowly put it back together piece by piece. It started out so slowly that I considered putting it down in the early stages, but I’m so glad I stuck with it. Another beautiful addition to the world by Markus Zusak.
Call me sentimental. This book probably only deserved 4 stars but it was such a pleasure to read (after about 50 pages...before that it's poetic to the point of abstraction). After reading Zusak's other two books, I saw the author weaving in and out of his story, giving himself away in parallels and habits. The narrator who is not the protagonist, themes of grief, a rough working class crew of characters and of course, humanized death let me get to know the author behind the words.
The book itself was marvelous. It was an epic made of the most ordinary stuff. He gave ordinary occurrences (trips to museums, first fights) the gargantuan import they have only in the mind of a child. It was magnificent. I enjoyed the circular story-telling, poetic prose, and fell in love with the characters. I read with a lump in my throat for a good 200 pages.
Not the easiest read, but well worth it!

Something about the style of this book bothered me, and kept me a little too removed from the characters. The story was interesting, but I just wasn’t very invested.
