“Sometimes people are in so much pain that they don't think clearly. They make awful choices that hurt themselves and others without intending to.”

Oh how do I can finally be able to move on from this universe and especially the Kaul family!?!?

I'm quite secure. I will never regret the fantastic experience of returning to the Gree Bone Saga universe and getting to know the young Kauls, especially learning about their own point of view when they were younger (not to mention Ayt Mada's younger self). Also, I admire how Fonda Lee concludes each short story with her perspectives so that we may comprehend it from the author's point of view.

This series will hold a special place in my heart🥹🥹🥹

The Witch and Her Friend : 4 stars. Ayt Mada will always be that b****.

Not Only Blood : 5 stars. This was short, but I loves every single word of it. I loved seeing a young Lan and a young Anden!

Better Than Jade : 5 stars. I adored this! Seeing the beginning of Wen and Hilo's relationship put the biggest smile on my face.

Granddaughter Cormorant : 4 stars. Shae has and will always be a bad***.

A delightful return to Janloon and the Kaul family. The introduction and brief remarks after each short story were a delightful surprise. Fonda Lee created something special with Jade City and I enjoyed getting to revel in her world once again. I am very much inclined to start the series from the beginning with this new understanding of these amazing characters.

This was fine. The witch and her friend was most interesting to me. I also wanted more Wen outside of Hilo. I loved her character from the beginning of the trilogy, but hate how much of an accessory she was to Hilo tbh. She finally does something for herself
and her husband cheats on her and verbally abuses her… but she never stops being loyal to him. Her betrayal of Hilo was one of my favorite parts of her character story. She was protecting her family as any Green Bone would. Hilo and Wen’s relationship is too traditional and toxic to be made into a cute romantasy idk.

With a collection of stories I usually rank them first.

None of these stories are bad by any means. Im ranking them by what I enjoyed the most.

In 4th place was Granddaughter Cormorant. Shae is one of my favorite characters but this story was exactly how Fonda Lee describes after it was done, extra. For fun. To show that part of her life. In a way it's filler but not in a negative way.

3rd place was Better Than Jade. Romantasy haha. It was cute seeing Hilo and Wen falling in love. Even more fun seeing Kehn and Tar again though. This was heartwarming and fun.

2nd place was The Witch and Her Friend. This one fascinated me. It was a bit of a retcon but also fun to see that Ayt Mada had a weird connection to Emery Anden. Ure was an interesting character and I'm glad I got to see Anden's mom and what happened with her.

1st place was easily Not Only Blood. For one, I get to spend more time with Lan. If you know you know. Two, I think it was excellently handled how he got Anden adopted as a Kaul. It actually benefits his character so much in Jade Legacy.

Rating is hard.
Plot = .50 (purposefully there was really only 2 of them that had much.)

Characters = 1 (focused on excellent characters.)

Promise = 1 (it was exactly what she said it was.)

Engagement = .75 (last story bored me a bit.)

Efficiency = .50 (would have like more. Maybe something on Bero or Kehn Maik in school. Even Gont Asch)

Overall = 3.75/5
