I enjoyed this 3.5 stars. Liked the insights into his running and writing. I look forward to reading more of his novels.

Murakami has long been one of my favorite writers, but I never picked up this book because I thought it was about running (I used to love to run, but I can’t seem to do it without injury anymore). It turns out it’s as much about his career as a novelist and the sacrifices that journey has taken. His clear style shines, and like most of his books, you come out of it not quite able to put your finger on why it affected you so.

While I found parts of this really meditative to listen to while walking the dogs, and the sections on writing to be interesting only because I'm writing a dissertation this year and it feels like a marathon, overall this was pretty boring and at times self-important. I am surprised an editor wanted to publish his run-of-the-mill diary entries and continually surprised at the world's general fascination with this man.

Thank you, Michael Perham for introducing me to this delightful author. Every book of his that I've read I've loved. And this one is no exception. Clearly different from his fiction, this book talks about Murakami's experience in training for marathons and tri's - clearly topics I am interested in. It was funny, insightful, honest, and wonderful. I will read this book again and again. My only complaint is that it's too short!

As both a runner and a reader I loved this book.
