This book was conceptually brilliant and all-around excellent read. I wasn’t pulled in the way that I had hoped, especially with it being so short, but I would still highly recommend this to anyone who loves horror and political commentary alongside meaningful character work. Reading this after having read Legendborn was also interesting as there were many similarities between Maryse and Bree, in my opinion!

This book has always been on my list but I was mainly drawn in by the cover. I knew it was fantasy too, which was just another bonus for me, but I didn’t know it would also have horror elements. Imagine my surprise though when I find out that not only is it fantasy but it’s about a Black woman who has a sword and goes around killing demons! This book is a wild ride and the story is a very fun and compelling one. It’s a quick read and I’m glad that I picked it up.

A moral story or folktale feel just with a whole lot more violence. Written well, and unlike anything I’ve read before. I think it was just a bit too gory for me to follow 100%. As someone who lives in Atlanta though, this was cool to read especially after just taking a weekend visit to Macon before picking this up!
