This was better than I was expected, even though I really enjoyed the first. I just thought this one couldn't live up to the quality of the first. And it didn't, but it didn't fall far short. I don't really like the character of Henry or the motivations of most of the characters, even though that's partially the point of the books. This book didn't feel as fresh and original as the first and had more cliches that felt outdated and some even offensive. But I do still enjoy the thought processes from Lily and it was interesting to watch the twists/mystery unfold.

oh boy where do I even begin with this? 🤯🤯 I’m still gathering my thoughts together because WOW, what a ride!!!

you absolutely 100% have to read THE KIND WORTH KILLING before you read this one, even though this one is categorized as a “semi-sequel” … there are so many spoilers and answers from the first novel in this one, so I’m grateful for those 😅

while this book focuses mostly around kimball (the police detective turned private detective), it was truly lily’s POV and thought process that really sold it for me! I wasn’t as invested in the side characters this time around, but the way they connected with kimball’s past was 🤌🏼 I was SCREAMING!!!

in hindsight, I definitely should have figured out all of the plot twists, but I was simply along for the ride

I don’t think this lived up to the hype that I felt after TKWK, but it was a great extended epilogue! the unfolding of the sub-plot between kimball and lily was a little slow and out of left field, compared to their thoughts and actions from the first book, but adding in a whole new plot was a wise choice!!

this is definitely a must read for anyone who absolutely adored TKWK, like me! it’s worth the wait!

Smart, immersive and twisted, Peter Swanson's The Kind Worth Saving doesn't disappoint. It was a dose of nostalgia for me, for my first Peter Swanson book was The Kind Worth Killing. You do not have to read book one to begin this one. Peter's ability to capture narcissism is at its finest with a character like Joan. The pacing was brilliant and diverse, with Henry Kimball dominating the first half and the OG Lily Kintner making an impactful return. The simplistic plot of a former English teacher, now private investigator (Kimball), helping his former student, now client (Joan), in catching her husband having an affair with his co-worker intricately branches out to unlikely alliances, high school memories and an unfortunate accident. I devoured this book in one sitting and could never anticipate the ending that was simply jaw-dropping. I am still thinking about all the puzzle pieces coming together with such simplicity and yet delivering a power punch read.

Do not skip this one if you're a fan of domestic/marriage noir etched with twists and turns.

A big thank you to NetGalley & Faber and Faber for giving me an ARC. This honest review is left voluntarily.

SYNOPSIS
  • The Kind Worth Saving (TKWS) is Book 2 in series. The first book is called The Kind Worth Killing (TKWK).
  • The plot is extremely similar to TKWK, as it centers around people coming together to plot “the perfect” murders.

MY THOUGHTS
  • I typically love Peter Swanson’s work. Whenever I see he has stuff coming out, I’m excited to read it!
  • ***If you haven’t read TKWK, you should read it first, as TKWS has major spoilers for TKWK.**
  • I had read TKWK when it came out several years ago, and I reread it before reading TKWS. I really enjoyed TKWK. I wish TKWS wasn’t written as a sequel to TKWK, as it retroactively ruins the ending of TKWS.
  • To me, it seems TKWK was Swanson’s most successful book, and TKWS feels like an easy attempt to cash in on that success. The books are structured the same way, the mystery/killings are same motif, the multiple POVs are same, and the book is even divided in same ways (i.e., parts). Very dejavĂş, but in a purposeful way. It’s like the formula worked, and so, this one was done in mirror image of the first. Needless to say, it isn’t original.
  • TKWK came out in 2015, so it’s another reason this “sequel” feels off to me. For one, TKWK wasn’t written as a series book. It had an ending that worked. Second, TKWS came out 8 years after TKWK? That seems weird to wait that long to do a sequel.
  • As for TKWS, I really didn’t like seeing Lily and Kimball in this sequel. Their friendship is.. odd? Since it has been years since TKWK came out, TKWS gives the impression Swanson forgot how he wrote Lily and Kimball in the prior book, especially Lily.

TL;DR: ⭐️⭐️⭐️2.5 stars rounded up to 3. Read TKWK first, as TKWS contains major spoilers for TKWK.
