Ummm.....Meh with a capital M.
Story is lacking, yet narrative is so descriptive. The story could have been told with 25% of the word count.
Feel like maybe there was supposed to be some underlying moral/thought-provoking theme but all I got was "lower class people evolve into actual lower class, sewer dwelling race due to gap in intelligence?"
Elitist much?
Then, to top it off, Time Traveler, being such a typical, intelligent, English aristocrat type, continuously describes this race in horrible descriptive language? Because they are pale and live underground? I just feel sorry for the Morlocks...

I was surprised to learn that Wells was a socialist, I didn't know much about him before reading this. This story definitely felt like a late 19th century British man's perspective on time travel, but I did see the socialist bits too.
I don't know what took me so long to finally read this book! I love time travel in science fiction and it is fascinating to read Wells' take on not only how time travel would work, but the future he imagined it would reveal.
I don't think the story is perfect, Wells' concept of the future comes across as rather stilted and lacks the spark I expect from my science fiction. But I do like how Wells' knew that quirks of science fiction could be used for more than just telling an interesting story and how his writing exploited that fact to make a statement. I wish I knew what it was like to read this as one of his contemporaries. Now that would be some interesting time travel!
