This spooky middle-grade series so great! I loved Small Spaces, and while I liked that one better than Dead Voices, Dead Voices still did a fantastic job of telling a spooky, short story with memorable plotting, solid emotional character beats and a truly incredible setting. (Complete with The Shining vibes!) I realized while reading it that each book of the quartet takes place in a single season, which is something that - as a person who deeply appreciates seasons - absolutely delightful.
This one takes place in winter, and man...IS IT EVER WINTERY.
Already excited for the summer book, Dark Waters. For middle-grade readers seeking to be creeped out but not scared, this is a perfect choice.

3.5 stars - Quick and spooky, Dead Voices was enjoyable in spite of the slightly contrived ending

"Ghosts are stronger in the dark."
"Ghosts like it when you’re afraid. It means you acknowledge them."
Spoilers beyond this point 👉
Ooooh a creepy ski lodge, a former orphanage, a terrifying Mrs. Hemlock to keep us all in line, creepy ghost children, the other side of the mirror and the return of the smiling man! I'm sold!!!
Quotable Quotations 🗣 📢
"Sometimes Ollie. Brian, and Coco argued. Sometimes they annoyed each other. But they stuck together. Even for little stuff like going to the bathroom down a spooky dark hallway. Coco was looking a lot happier. "Yep. Let's go together," she said. Ollie was glad she had her friends." ❤️
"I believe in memory. I believe in remembering someone you love so well that it becomes kind of like a ghost. You remember someone so hard that it feels like they're in the next room, just around the corner, that they could walk in any minute."
"Wiser and greater men than you have tried outsmarting me, as you put it. They are dead now.” “Well,” said Coco very coldly, “that’s too bad for them. But I’m a girl, and I bet I can beat you at chess."
"What’s a face?” remarked Seth. “Just another kind of deception."
"More than one thing can open a door between worlds, or hold one open."
