3.5/5 stars. Pretty good but book 2 and 3 of this series just feel like they are setting things up for the final book. Like it doesn’t feel like each book is it’s own quests so it’s kinda of unsatisfying. Also it makes the magic and stuff kinda confusing and unknowable so it feels more magical but it also makes the book as a whole more confusing. But the vibes are fun and I like the dynamics of the teens so it’s okay.
everything would go so much smoother if anyone listened to literally anybody else, why does everyone have a lone rebellious hero syndrome in this series

Wow, definitely my favorite in the series so far. These characters make me CRAZY, I’m so attached to them and obsessed with watching their progression. I feel like this is where Maggie Steifvater finally gets the hang of balancing her tendency to lean into the atmospheric descriptions with the need for actual plot development. The magic system is still one of those where you just kinda nod along and accept whatever is thrown at you. (Like, yes, of course the trees are sentient and speak latin.) I think I’m more than okay with that, though. Steifvater has such a specific writing style that is exactly how I think and feel, if that makes any sense, and I think it allows for some very strong character writing. The relationships are also finally hitting their stride. The found family aspects had me crying/throwing up/etc. and the romantic relationships…..god. The amount of tenderness between everyone is sooooooo. Lots of great humor in here, too; I love a nice running joke.
Not a perfect book by any means but so lovely, comforting, and magical, which is everything that a YA book should be.
