"Summer's End" is the fifth Shady Hollow mystery with a unique take on dark academia. It's late August, and Vera Vixen, the town reporter agrees to chaperone the annual school field trip to Summer's End to visit an ancient tomb built by woodland creatures. However, days after arriving, they find out that there was a murder that occurred, with a modern dead body inside of the tomb!

This cozy mystery was just what I needed to finish off my birthday festivities and as we enter the season of fall! I really appreciate that I didn't need to read the first four books to understand the world of Shady Hollow. This fifth novel started off explaining to us the characters, setting and Shady Hollow lore. It didn't take long to fall in love with the coziness of it all! As someone who doesn't normally read cozy stories, this dark academic-centered plot complimented the adventures of Vera Vixen and her best friend, Lenore. I'm happy to say that I did not see the mystery unravel as it did. I'll have to find myself copies of the first four books because I would love to read Juneau Black's backlog of Shady Hollow novels!

I really love this series. I think with a mystery series it can sometimes be hard to follow up the first in the series, but I have to say this one definitely had the same magic as the first. It was nice to go to another place in the Shady Hollow world and learn more about the history of the woodland world. I think the last few books I could guess who it was at the center of the mystery but this one was a surprise and a  well done one at that
