I vividly remember watching ‘The Secret Garden’ movie as a child and loving it. I decided to read this enchanting story to my children. I did find this more challenging than I expected. This wasn’t only due to the fact that I didn’t inherit my mums Yorkshire accent from her childhood growing up there.
I also found the sentences didn’t flow very easily and I often found myself struggling to read the very long sentences aloud. My daughter started to lose interest a bit by the end (maybe due to that lack of Yorkshire accent) but she also kept asking me to repeat certain parts or ask what was happening.
This made for a slightly less enjoyable reading experience.

i re-read this because i found it in a stack of books in my bedroom and felt i needed to! i haven’t read it since i was teeny tiny and it was just as sweet as i remember. i HAVE to deduct some pointage for the occasional racism because ouch.

Such a heartwarming story, albeit some parts didn’t age well.  Despite that, I loved the idea of a garden softening the hard hearted girl, strengthening the weak spirited boy, and reviving the life of a man dead inside.  A lesson for all - you can focus on your  misery or you can focus on your joy - it’s your choice.
