The best of the trilogy.
All I've wanted this whole time (besides Mal being far, far away) was to see Grisha of different orders working in tandem, and this book definitely delivered. David explaining the concepts behind new Grisha abilities helped things feel more grounded this time around, and the scope of this book fleshed out a lot more of the worldbuilding. Really refreshing changes all around.
I do feel like sidelining for most of the book was a real loss. He was the character I found most appealing in his complexities and pure charm, and his absence was greatly noticed.
The ending was what it was always going to be, but that doesn't mean I've come around on But YA is what it is.

Mal as a character, nor do I feel that Mal and Alina have any sort of chemistry at all. They have history and painful attempts at the "we've always belonged" storyline, but it just doesn't feel right at all. Especially when Alina has such better chemistry with both the Darkling and Nikolai.sea_su's review against another edition
UGH sorry but I accidentally saw a spoiler and instead of wasting my time and reading it, I looked up all the spoilers for this book and just no. To all of it. I'm still gonna watch the show tho...

Better than the other two. The ending was maybe a little predictable but fast action and a good plot meant I just kept reading and reading!

I felt this series held so much potential, only to be let down by the final book. It felt like Bardugo tried too hard to keep certain characters stories alive, that it felt less than believable.
The ending felt distinctly ordinary, and the momentum I felt from the first book was completely lost.
I loved each individual character, but the storyline as a whole was a letdown to me.

The books that I think deserve a 5 star are the ones that make me laugh, cry, and scream in rage. The ones that make me care about the character so much that when they fight injustice, I am ready to go find a portal to their world to save them. They’re the ones that grab me in their fist and don’t let me go until long after I’ve read them.
This book had it all.
I would say this is the best installment of the Shadow and Bone trilogy. I loved the character especially. (Adrik and Zoya anyone?) I loved Mal and Alina’s relationship and how it was so pure and didn’t take over the entire book. I am desperately in love with Nicholai. Also the Darkling for some… strange reason.
The end!! The plot twist(ssss)! It broke me, then glued me back together with a few tiny pieces missing. Leigh Bardugo really does understand the importance of loss and sacrifice and heartbreak in the fabric of a story. It was beautiful, and I love how she does her Befores and Afters.
That was long, so if you made it this far, you can take my word for it: you won’t regret this book! (Or series;)

I think this book redeemed the series as a whole. I did not like how most of the book she is worried about her martyrdom and how it is all going to end tragically. The other characters were quite interesting to read, and Alina isn't quite so self-hating as she was in the first two books.
