This book changed my life. I would not say it's one of the best books ever written, but it changed my life for the better. I was going through a bit of a spiritual crisis at the time that I read it and it lifted me out of a misplaced sense of obligation to the past. The past is just that, the past. This book gave me the permission I'd been seeking to see things in a different way. I will forever be in the debt of Anne Rice for that gift. It also does stand out as one of the better books in the Vampire Chronicles. It's probably my third favorite, from a strictly literary angle.

This is a DNF for me. I picked it up for the 2021 PopSugar category of "a best seller from the 90s" and I loved Interview, the Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned. but didn't like Body Thief. I was really hoping that was a one-off issue, but that was not the case.

Another reviewer said "Memnoch the Devil was nothing like what I was expecting as the next installment of The Vampire Chronicles. Absolutely drenched in theological argument, Memonch the Devil is not for anyone who dislikes religion in their fiction. Only two things happened in this entire book. Lestat stalked a victim for the first third of the book. He then spent the last two thirds of the book talking to the devil (and occasionally God)." and I completely agree.

It was clear that she wrote this after she 'found the church' and I don't like the massive amount of religious crap-yes, I said crap-that was in this. Also, I didn't know it was possible for Lestat could be more bratty or self-absorbed than he was in Tale of the Body Thief, but he was and I can't stand him. If any or all of the other Vampire Chronicles are written from his POV, then I will not be reading them. On a side note, I'd love to get Jessie & David's vampire stories.

I see why folks say this book is basically Anne Rice’s Bible fanfic. Difficult read and hard to grasp the importance of some concepts if you don’t have much knowledge of Christianity. Aside from the first third of the book and the last few chapters, it doesn’t really feel like a true Vampire Chronicles book.
