I remember reading In the Night Kitchen when I was a kid. It wasn't a favourite of mine, but Maurice Sendak's books have a way of sticking in the mind. I don't think it's his best book - it certainly doesn't offer much for the adult reader like Where the Wild Things Are does. Even Sendak's illustrations don't have the same crazy wild strangeness that they usually do. Although kids might find it fun, and it's got that interesting dream reality thing going on that Sendak enjoys so much.
After reading it I discovered it has a reputation as one of the most controversial picture books in America. It frequently appears on the American Library Association's list of most challenged books. According to wikipedia: "Critics object to Mickey's nudity (which depicts not only his buttocks, but also his penis and testicles). Some also interpret sexual innuendo in the events, with the nudity, free-flowing milky fluids, and giant (allegedly phallic) milk bottle." Which just goes to show that some people have strange imaginations - and I'm not talking about Maurice Sendak.

In the Night Kitchen is a wonderfully illustrated book from Maurice Sendak about a boy’s night time adventure take him to the bakers who need help getting their milk. Kids will enjoy the fun way that Mickey gets the milk for the bakers and both adults and kids alike will be able to appreciate the illustrations.

This is such a good book. When I was little I found it REALLY SCARY and creepy but loved it anyway. Now I am big and 15 and it's not scary, bit still a bit creepy, and I still love it. Oh and when I was a small child who gave no shits about nudity I very much respected this book for doing the same, and I still do. It's also the way that it's not a big deal in the story - Mickey just falls out of his pyjamas - even though reviewers always tend to focus on it

Umm, Maurice Sendak really likes kids in onesies. This book was just plain weird and it probably has some perverted subtext that I don't even want to start thinking about. It's clever but weird, in the same way as the song 'MacArthur Park'...
When reading, you can practically smell the baking bread!
