I usually don't go for counterfactual fiction novels. There's something slightly boring to me about reading the "what ifs". BUT this world that Harris has created is fascinating. The counterfactual socio/economic/political setting serves as important context and also as a character in its own right. He creates such an interesting weaving of compelling story and setting - its not like im reading a history book. I'm reading a story that's necessarily informed by the realities of the context. Also the ending?? Loved it.

Pairing a murder mystery with an alternative universe in which Germany won WW2, made for a very interesting read.

Took me a while to get into then I couldn't put it down for the last 3/4

It's one thing to create a really intriguing murder mystery and have it play out perfectly.

It's another thing to create a vivid alternate history that is both complex and utterly believable.

To do both in one novel, in less than 400 pages, is remarkable.
