i was this close to add this to "made-my-heart-skip-a-beat". but it didn't make it.
i really liked the book, but i dragged it for way too long and i think [definitely] i lost interest hence not on the said shelf.
i loved the simple way the book was written. of course, the simplicity is apparent.
i loved/ hated the characters. it's complicated.
too many quotes have been selected out of this book. now this makes my heart skip a beat.
someone tell me why haven't i read this before?

Heard some people disliked this book, but I've always been fascinated with D.H Lawrence so I gave it a go. I'm very glad I did, as it was a great read (though it does get a little slow the last 1/3 of the book). Lawrence is clearly a great writer, as the story is a simple as they come – and yet he still sucks you in. Characters were great, though towards the end your realize (*spoilers*) Paul is kind of a dick.

This book...

Ugh, I can't really think of enough bad things to say about it.

It was boring. It was insanely sexist. The main character was a selfish jerk with very few redeeming qualities. There was no plot. Women were used as plot devices at best, plot devices that were generally responsible for all the ills in the world. Abusive men were forgiven and the women blamed in their place. The main character used women for mindless sex and then got angry at the women when they didn't want to "belong" to him. In addition, I wasn't overly impressed with the writing style, blah. It was flowery and stupid at some points, while being repetitive and banal in other places.

A terrible, terrible book.

This is probably going to be a terrible review, but Paul just ANNOYED me. He had no real passion, even his love for his mother seemed almost weak sickly. And the open ending only irritated me further. The ending made me feel like he had done absolutely nothing with his book and all the strands of his life had fizzled weakly out- matching his personality perfectly. I loved Miriam, though(hopeless romantic relates to hopeless romantic, what a surprise).

Brilliantly submerging itself into the deepest desires and fleeting emotions of its characters, Sons and Lovers is a heartfelt illustration of Lawrence's relationship with his mother. It's honest, naturalistic, dismal and fatally zealous. There are a few speckles of blandly written tedium here and there, but they do little to dampen the impassioned fire Lawrence kindles.
