I'm gonna go ahead and give myself a pat on the back cause I was legit convinced that I would never finish this.

I was a bit put-off by all the negative reviews I saw online, and 100 pages into the book I though "yep, it all makes sense now."

I honestly don't get why this is constantly praised and described as this really magnificent work of literature, except from the very obvious ŒDIPUS complex taking place.
The characters (with no exception) were very flat and unlikable. The plot was almost non-existent. It was just an endless circle of back and forth arguments between the characters and it got boring very quickly.

I can see why Forster regarded Lawrence as "the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation".

Quite frankly, Lawrence's use of the English language is impressive, idiosyncratic, affluent and aesthetic. I feel like one should have a piece of paper and a pen by their side (whilst they are reading), for they can't/won't forget the beauty and the importance the words have.

The beginning of the novel swept me off my feet, the middle sang to me a slow lullaby, nonetheless, I found the ending quite dull and predictable; which made me lose the initial interest I had in the novel.

What I did like about this novel is the way it approached the themes it explored. Although, what put me off for the most part was the inactivity, the constant going-with-the-flow and the communication (or lack thereof) of/between the characters.

On the brighter side, the repetition of certain words in the novel doesn't prevent me from recommending it to anyone who's a lover of modernist literature! :)

Kinda annoying at parts because some of the men are stupid

D.H. Lawrence... You either love or loathe the man apparently, according to all of the reviews I've just trawled through. As Sons and Lovers is my first novel of his I've read, I'm still undecided on my own opinion of him. He writes wonderfully, has a talent for portraying emotion with depth, and has a good deal of purple prose. However, the subject matter (the story of his life, notably his unusual relationship with his mother) was somewhat unsettling which actually made for a riveting read. It's highly character driven and you really get a feeling of knowing the characters. I'm looking forward to reading more from him.

I think popular wisdom is that Lawrence is an author you like best in your late teens and twenties; I did definitely fall in love with him as a high-schooler. But I still think there's something there.
