Liked it but thought some of the talk of race and the relationships with a minor were kinda weird - they never state time/ages but it’s implied and it made the book harder to consume.

I hated this. Adam was an angry, bitter, misogynistic, sanctimonious prick whose answer for everything was to fight them. He came home, after not talking to anyone for 5 years, and immediately started telling everyone how to live their life. He decided that only he could solve the murders and went out of his way to do stupid things, but got angry when the cops told him to butt out. It was so unbelievable. The family drama was way over the top and had me rolling my eyes the entire book. The ending was dumb and didn't bother explaining how
this "frail, weak, twitchy" girl could have possibly killed and attacked her victims
. I also wasn't a fan of his writing. There were a lot of metaphors and stereotypes in this. It made me very uncomfortable how he talked about/described POC. I basically hated everything about this book and would have stopped, but it was the book for my book club.

Suspenseful, but lacked the familiarity I hoped for with a local setting and local author. Setting wasnt nearly as important as I had hoped.

I actually liked it better the second time around!

John Hart's second book is another solid thriller. Not as good as Last Child or Iron House, but an enjoyable an quick read. Great summer page-turner.

It's the story of Adam Chase, who left his family's farm in Salisbury five years earlier after he was found not guilty of murder. When he comes back to his home town, more strange things happen on his family's farm. An attack and a murder.

These books are like candy: easy and enjoyable.

Apparently you either love this book or hate it. I didn't like it. There is enough grief and darkness in the world without reading a book filled with it. I could hardly finish the book, and while the ending did draw all of the various threads together, I realize that John Hart may be one of those writers whose works I will select with caution. Excellent writing though, just dark, dark, dark. I have enough problems, thank you, without taking another trip to the dark side.
