RECENZE: http://imoox.blogspot.cz/2014/09/mesto-kde-lide-mizi-beze-stopy.html

Why I read it: ARC Tour
The Plot: Cryer's Cross is a very small town, so when a teen girl disappears the town is shaken. Who would do something like this in a town where everyone knows everyone else? She is never found, and weeks later another teenager disappears. This time it's main character Kendall's best friend. Kendall starts finding new messages carved into the desk next to her, and when she touches the desk, she can hear voices. Something weird is going on, and Kendall (who has OCD) fears she may be going crazy. The story is told in third person present tense, which brings a sense of urgency to the story, but can also, at times, be annoying. When the mystery was revealed at the end, I found it unbelievable and almost laughable. I was hoping for a little bit more.
The Characters: Kendall isn't bad as far as girl characters in YA books go. She's not a silly, whiny girl who everyone seems to be in love with, so there is that. That being said, of course there is a love interest, and he's not bad either, but you can see it coming a mile away.
The Setting: Cryer's Cross is an interesting little town, and it was really the only setting where this story could have worked. It's a farming community with a tiny population. So tiny that there is a one room high school with about 24 students total. I found the setting interesting, and would actually have liked to read a different type of story set here. Maybe one with less horror and more with a fun, small-town life feel.
Who Should Read This? Fans of the authors previous books will probably enjoy this, Although I didn't like it as well as Wake and Fade, it was miles better than the mess that was Gone.
Final Thoughts: I really didn't love this one, and I wasn't sure what to expect because I feel like this author has gone downhill with her writing. I was mostly underwhelmed, especially with how it ended, but it was a quick read, and interesting enough to keep me going, so not a total loss.
Grade: C-
Cover Thoughts: The cover is pretty creepy, and fits the story well.

Tihle dva příběh úžasně ozvláštňovali, Kendall svou poruchou a myšlením, Jacián zas svých chováním.
Určitě mě dostali odstavce nazvané MY.

Pomalu, metodicky, vyděšená a povznesená zároveň pokrývá své tělo hlínou. Začíná rytmicky vykřikovat: "Pomoz mi, vysvoboď mou duši. Pomoz mi. Vysvoboď mou duši."
Zahrabává si stehna, břicho. Zemina ji izoluje a zahřívá.
A pak, když měsíc zajde za porolozpadlou budovu, všechno okolí ní i v ní utichne.

A čeká.
Čeká, až Kendall vydechne naposled.

CRYER’S CROSS is a fantastically creepy paranormal horror story from the incredible storyteller Lisa McMann. Whether or not you like horror stories, this is a really engaging quick read that may even be better than her Wake series.

Lisa McMann’s third-person present-tense writing style brings a simultaneous immediacy and calculated distance to the story. Everything that is happening to Kendall feels like it’s happening to her right this very moment, which makes it really easy to get caught up in what’s going on with her. At the same time, the distance makes it easy for us to enjoy CRYER’S CROSS as simply an exhilarating and fast-paced horror novel.

CRYER’S CROSS’ creepiness factor comes less from the actual physical object of horror and more on the way individuals’ suspicions slowly insinuates themselves into the townspeople’s minds. It’s what made Jacian and Kendall’s budding relationship so dear to me: that it could still build in this slow, tortured, believable, and utterly sexy way despite the unusual happenings in town. Yes, I have a tiny crush on Jacian. I have a soft spot for dark, broody, tortured, protective minority sweethearts.

Kendall’s OCD, which purports to have a significant contribution to her fascination with her town’s mystery, felt rather undeveloped for its supposed significance. I’ve read other books featuring OCD characters before, and Kendall’s OCD just never felt completely realized. Despite that, though, I really liked Kendall. She is a star soccer player without the jockish trappings, has a good relationship with her parents, and is good about making friends. Some of her interactions with people felt a little simplistic, like they were simply for the convenience of revealing something about the story. However, it did not detract from my enjoyment of the story.

I don’t like to be scared, but CRYER’S CROSS was a psychological thriller with an appreciable amount of interesting characters to keep me invested. Lisa McMann proves that she is the master of writing horror stories for those who don’t like horror.

This was so confusing at first. Once I finished the books, I was like, "OHHHHH!" Not my favorite, but pretty good.

After the Wake Triology ended, I was anxious to see what author Lisa McMann would bring to the table next. When I signed up to review Cryer's Cross, I wondered if it would be as addictive as the Wake series. All I can say is this--WOW!

I love how this author can pull you into the story with such short chapters, a quick pace, and wonderful writing. Yet the one thing that fascinated me the most about this book is the suspense and mystery. I could not put this book down! I didn't want to miss one single paragraph of this book! The character's were great and the story was dark with a touch of mystery to keep you guessing.

Even though I loved this book, I do wish it had more chapters to it. It seemed to be missing parts of the story of the town throughout it. I wanted to know more about the history of the Reform School and the souls that were trapped. Once you start reading the book, the cover makes much more sense to you as well. I was sad at the outcome of some of the characters too. I feel if the author could work in just a few more chapters this book would be complete and leaving the reader truly fulfilled.

If you are looking for a new young adult read that will leave you gripping the pages in suspense, then I recommend picking this book up on release day!
