I really admire le Carre's writing: sparse and elegant. The writing and his observations are strong enough to sustain a book where, to be honest, not a whole lot happens. The main concerns of this book are the failures of the intelligence community to effectively function and the strangled class dynamics of Britain.
Really enjoyable.
Really enjoyable.
Surpassed Spy in my personal opinion.
And it would seem le Carré has something against reasonably happy endings.

I don’t think I’ve ever come across a more cynical bunch of characters, but they were fascinating to follow. Some authors are all about the hook at the beginning of their novels, but Le Carre is the master of the sticky ending.

Le Carre's contempt for the British Intelligence Service is obvious in this novel, more so than any other. What a bunch of self-important, proud, idiotic buffoons, traipsing about trying the relive the 'good ol' days' of the war. Relics from the past, no wanting to accept the world has moved on without them.
While the majority of characters are unlikeable, I still enjoyed reading this, and couldn't wait to see their plan go all to hell, as it obviously had to.

Reading the author's books in order certainly didn't care for the structure and content of this story as I found it filled with detail which was a bore.
