I hardly know where to start in trying to capture my thoughts and reflections around Kurt Vonnegut Jr’s, Breakfast of Champions. This is certainly one of the most mindfucking (can’t think of any other way to describe it!) books I have ever read!

I got the impression while reading that the whole book was a multi faceted statement on the absurdity of 20th century capitalist, greedy and self absorbed culture. Kurt Vonnegut Jr leaves no stone unturned in this satirical commentary on everything from deeply entrenched racist attitudes to the lyrics of America’s national anthem to society’s obsession with “size doesn’t matter”, when everything else says the opposite.

The book for me was actually a confronting indictment on our western cultures way of life. Vonnegut use of definitions both in words and pictures throughout the book makes explicit the literal meanings of so many objects and activities. At times I was overwhelmed with the ridiculousness of the reality of life and that we’ve actually been hoodwinked into thinking that our way of life resembles sanity. Vonnegut’s message begs to differ as he exposes the meaninglessness of much of what we ascribe incredible significance to.

I have to give this 5 stars. No choice.

Pretty much a guidebook for the strangeness of the mundane.

Malkovic felt confused throughout the reading, and I just couldn't follow along with it.

Blueprint blue tainted of individual and social insanity.

There is a constant relationship with the author of this book as an omniscient character in the book while two of his characters make the choices that lead to their first meeting. It's an interesting way to read a story, but it turned me off to the story. Especially when he proved how well he knew his creation by telling the reader the sizes of each male character's members.

A lot of light is shed on how Kilgore Trout sees the world of destruction and human habitation. And Dwayne Hoover becomes the fanatic reader who takes all Trout's words to heart. The moral of the story could be that if you write far out fiction there could be that one insane guy who will take you seriously and make that fiction become a reality. Which in Dwayne's case doesn't bode well for the people around him.
fast-paced

Listen, as a man in his late 40's who has completely lost faith in humanity and the American experiment in 2021, Breakfast of Champions hit a little too close to home. Literally, took me 3x as long to complete as it should have.

I love Vonnegut, and I enjoyed BoC. However, I cannot say it improved my view of humanity and it's future....
