This book really has everything in its 120 odd pages. It's a disorientated tale of Oedipa Maas and her quest to be executrix of a will, during which she uncovers a conspiracy of postal delivery that goes back hundreds of years. Maybe. At times funny, sometimes horrific, but always compelling.
Also, I read this after Europe in Autumn, because I heard the 2 were similar, and Crying... does sort of work as a loose prequel to that. Go read that as well!

من يملك الصبر والجلد وطول النفس على قراءة هذه الرواية الشاقة في قراءتها، سيحظى بالكثير والكثير من المتعة العقلية على نحو يتخطى ما يتخيله وما يتوقعه.
تأتي (صيحة القطعة 49) التي تعد أول رواية تترجم باللغة العربية على اﻹطلاق للكاتب اﻷمريكي توماس بنشون كإرهاصة نابعة من السيولة اﻹجتماعية والسياسية والثقافية التي غلبت على حقبة الستينات في الولايات المتحدة اﻷمريكية، مما ولد عنه حالة من التيه والتخبط في ظل عالم يعاد تشكيله من جديد على أسس مختلفة عما سبقها بالكلية، وهو ما يفرض حالة من محاولة إيجاد مسارات أو طرق لوضع منطق ما لهذه الحالة من السيولة التي تتلاحق تجلياتها بلا هوادة.
ربما يمكن تلخيص الصعوبات التي ستواجه من يقدم على قراءة (صيحة القطعة 49) في عدة نقاط رئيسية: حبكة مراوغة جدًا في ملاحقة تتابعاتها مما قد يحتاج معه من القاريء بذل مجهود إضافي، وجود احتمالات عديدة جدًا لما نشاهده خلال رحلة أوديبا ماس الغرائبية والسريالية في مجملها، وجود كم هائل جدًا من الشخصيات التي تتابع على الحكاية بظهورات قصيرة ووجيزة جدًا، انفتاح قوس الحكاية على مصراعيه ولا نهائية خاتمة الرواية التي تبنيء باستمرار رحلة البحث العبثية التي تقوم بها أوديبا ماس، كم كبير من اﻷلعاب اللفظية، تلاحق الصور الساخرة والمعلومات بلا هوادة، عدم التيقن من مدى فائدة الحقائق التي تكتشفها أوديبا لرحلة بحثها عن منظمة البريد السرية التي تعمل سرًا كمنافس للبريد الحكومي.
تشعر طوال احداث الرواية وكأن بنشون يحاول مواجهة عبثية ولامنطقية الواقع المعاش بعبثية ولا منطقية موازية لها وتتفوق عليها من حيث جرعة السخرية، كأنه يعكسها في المرآة، أو يحاول أن يصنع منطق ما لهذا الواقع، أو حتى يسخر أصلًا من محاولة صنع منطق لهذا الواقع، فربما لا يوجد أي مغزى من هذه الرحلة برمتها، وربما تكون المؤامرة التي تكتشفها أوديبا هذه من صنع خيالها بالكامل أو من جراء سوء قراءتها هى شخصيًا للمعطيات التي تجدها في الرحلة، أو محاولة يائسة منها ﻹيجاد هدف أسمى تتعلق به في ظل هذا العبث المهيمن، وربما تكون محض هلوسة بالترافق مع ثقافة تعاطي المخدرات التي شكلت رافدًا رئيسيًا في عالم الستينات، لكن كل لا ينفي مدى المتعة العقلية التي نحصل عليها من قراءة (صيحة القطعة 49).

Worth reading for the character names alone. Otherwise an extremely odd book that was a little difficult to follow. I was constantly trying to guess the underlying meaning and metaphors while following the puns and play on words.
I have no idea how to rate this. Not sure if it was written by an idiot or a genius.

This book isn’t for everyone, and truthfully I’m surprised it was for me.
Every English class in the world is centered around finding the meaning behind the text. The crying of lot 49 is a spectacular middle finger to everything I thought I knew about literature. You have to learn the rules to break the rules, and if nothing else this book is a masterclass in breaking the rules.
The themes are so interesting and so skillfully incorporated into the plot that even though I likely missed something and misunderstood something else, I must adorn this book with my highly coveted 5-star rating.

I wasn’t completely sure about The Crying of Lot 49 at first, but it won me over as I was reading it. What won me over was the chapter about Oedipa Maas’ journey through the Bay Area. When the gay man explained how the post horn symbol really represented a group called Inamorati Anonymous, which was designed to help people wane off their addiction to love, it started to click for me. There’s something oddly specific about the world-building, but it feels so accurate. I love how a group of Americans are sending their mail through an alternative system, something that spanned back centuries, but of course it flourished in southern California. There’s something beautiful about that.
There’s something weightless to The Crying of Lot 49, something in Thomas Pynchon’s writing, but it’s nevertheless a vivid and accurate portrayal. The more I think about it, the more I like it. This makes me want to dive more into Pynchon’s work.
