The History of Love

A beautifully written book. Interesting, clever, surprisingly moving. It felt fragile to me, but not because the plot was fragile. I don't know what it was, maybe the writing, maybe the characters. While reading it I said: 'Her writing feels a little awkward to me from time to time, but I think that awkwardness allows a really touching vulnerability.' I still think that, though I think the awkward feel decreased over time and the touching vulnerability stayed.
I really enjoyed reading this book, it felt warm, like a fuzzy blanket. Comforting, because I wasn't afraid to stumble into ugly sentences; they were all lovely. The only thing I regret is not reading this faster, and leaving long pauses in between reading parts. This meant that every time I started reading again I had to think real hard about who was who and what was what. I would've enjoyed it even more if I read it in less (spread out) sittings, I think.

Made me weep on the bus.

What can I say about this book?
It is so poetically written and deeply moving.
It is whimsical and yet so seriously heartbreaking.

I knew very little going into this.
Daughter writes to a novel author (author of a book her mother and father loved) when her widowed mother is going through emotionally tough times.
That was pretty much it.

So when I started reading this book and got to experience just how beautiful it was - I was blown away.

Such a beautiful and poignant book. Love the different perspectives and while it took a little while to understand the timing of each section, I eventually understood how it all went together. Highly recommend!

Bittersweet, complicated, and human.

I still don't really know how I feel about this book. It's well-written, intelligent, has a nice plot.... but the characters seemed so flat. Plus, it got confusing after a while. I'm still not sure I got all the connections in the end. I also feel like this book isn't finished. Like it needs another edit. an extra chapter. something.

As I started to read this book I felt myself wondering if this was the book for me. Was it a bit artsy and undirected? Initially I was a bit lost and unable to ground myself in the story but I persisted and I am so glad that I did. Once I had sorted out the characters and understood the slightly unconventional style of the book I was fully immersed in the wonderful prose. There are sentences and paragraphs that took my breath away. The characters were fallible and imperfect and I identified with so much of their angst and their obsessions and their yearning for love. The themes of loss and love are so beautifully explored. It is a magical and haunting book that manages to explore deep sadness yet leaves you feeling that all our journeys through life and loss are not unique but simply the human condition.
