4.5/5 stars. This book took me a long time to read, but it was worth it because this book is AMAZING. It took me a while to get into it but once I was in I was hooked. The writing in this book is wonderful. I loved it. <3

While there were parts of this that were beautifully written, the story line felt a little all over the place to me and I couldn’t stay engaged. This one is going on the DNF pile for me. 🤷‍♀️

**Update: picked it back up and finished. Still not my favorite. The structure of the story confused me and made me not want to put in the work to keep up. This is still a book that is beloved by many, so don’t take my word for it :)

Absolutely loved it.

This was a really great read. After I finished it, and thought about it more and more, it became better an better. I recommend reading it when you have a lot of time..not time to read in spurts. The story will flow better. Amazing...I will read it again.

The strong point of this novel for me was the flawless weaving of multiple storylines together. As readers we enjoy first-hand accounts of three different characters: Leo Gursky, a retired polish locksmith; Alma Singer, a 14-year in a complicated family dynamic and Litvinoff, a polish emigree to Chile; all searching for human connection. A book that plays with the roles of coincidence, timing and loss in shaping a life, this book reads easy and is well-paced.

I finally finished this book & I'm so glad I did. The first 50-60 pages were hard to get into (for me). The only complaint I really have about the book is the tendency for the narrator to ramble.
I loved how all the characters were essentially connected. It's a book you could read over and over again and discover something new each time.

I liked this book. I found it sweet and refreshing. It lacked (thank god) that need for newer writers to infuse their books with their own postmodern arrogance of "breaking it all down for you". It is a good story and there are cheerful jokes and tearful tributes to unrequited love. Oh-and- I know the author- she and her husband (Jonathon Saffron Foyer) brought me their dog a few years ago. My friend babysits for them, too! A brush with genius! They are super normal, nice New Yorkers it turns out.

I liked this mysterious love story but I didn't love it as much as I thought I would. 3.5 stars.
