I absolutely LOVED this book. It was such a good companion piece to the first book but it also stood really well on its own.
I loved getting to see my favorite characters again. I especially loved getting to see Elizabeth and John now that they were officially together. Their scenes were sometimes romantic and lovely and sometimes really heartwrenching and awful. But I loved every moment between them and I was so happy to read about them.
I also thought the plot was really good. It didn't fall flat compared to the first one and managed to continue the story without feeling like the story wasn't going anywhere or like the author didn't really know what to do. It was really well done and I was so happy to find out this was a duology.
I thought the ending was really nicely done and felt fitting. I was really satisfied with how everything wrapped up. I was a little bit confused about something that happened at the end but it didn't really leave me frustrated or anything. I just couldn't really wrap my mind around the explanation we were given but overall I really enjoyed the ending.
This was such a good series and I can't wait to read more from her!

Elizabeth does not have the same strength or power she did in the previous novel, but her skills as a fighter and assassin remain formidable. She is hiding among those she once saw as the enemy of the kingdom, and there is no love loss from the witches and wizards she once had targeted. They do not exactly trust her. When her healer boyfriend begins showing the strain of being under the stigma and turns against her, Elizabeth feels she must solve this problem on her own. She must take out Lord Blackwell. She knows this will likely mean her death.
I had enjoyed The Witch Hunter quite a bit, and The King Slayer was just as good in its own way. It is much more action-packed and tense. With every decision made and step taken, the suspense builds, leaving me turning the pages as quickly as I could. I really felt for Elizabeth and the situation she was in. While I think she did not always make the wisest of choices, I could see why she made them.
It was good to see some of the returning characters and get to know them a bit better, particularly John (the healer) and Shulyer (a reverent). I wouldn't have minded a bit more time with Fifer though. An interesting twist I was not expecting was the appearance of the usurped king, who has a fairly bad reputation among the witches and wizards--and for good reason. His relationship with Elizabeth is a complex one to say the least, and it was interesting to see how the two interacted in this second novel. I admit to not liking, even hating, his character in The Witch Hunter, and I certainly did not warm to him, not even by the end of this book. Although, I do think he had changed and grown as a character. Some things though are hard to forgive.
The King Slayer takes the reader deeper into the conflict between the kingdom and the witches and wizards. The Witch Hunter was richer in world building and The King Slayer more action-packed. However, the use of magic in this one seemed more diverse and unique. I thought the power shift between some of the characters, particularly John and Elizabeth, was interesting, and added a different layer to the overall stories between the two books.

Cadı Avcısı'nı sevmiştim, Şifacı ve Av'ı da sevmiştim bu yüzden beklentim çok büyüktü sanırım. Kral Katili içinse sevdim de diyebiliyorum nefret ettim de.
Öncelikle temayı, bütün bu atmosferi, savaş yapalım, kötü kalpli haksız yere tahta çıkmış olan amcayı (bana Aslan Kral'ı anımsatan bir senaryo) tahttan indirip sevmediğimiz ama yine tahammül edilebilir olan gerçek varisi tahta çıkaralım ve bütün bunların yükünü de henüz reşit olmamış (ya da henüz reşit olmuş) çocuklara yıkalım tarzındaki kurguları gerçekten çok seviyorum. Şaka değil. Hele ki hu fantastik ögelerle süslenmişse, etrafta cadılar, büyücüler ve hortlaklar cirit atıyorsa (aslında gerçekten cirit atıyorlardı herhalde çünkü olayların kayda değer bir kısmı cirit sahasında gerçekleşti) benim için on numara bir senaryodur. Bu sebeple kitabın bu özelliğine bayıldım. Gerçekten fazlasıyla keyif aldım bu durumdan ama saçımı başımı yolmak istememe sebep olacak o kadar saçmalık oldu ki bu keyfimi gerçekten bozdular.

Üstelik bu kitapta da sık sık geriye dönüş yapıp eğitimler sırasında çektiği zorlukları, ufak tefek küçük bir kız çocuğu olmasına karşın en güçlü cadı avcılarından biriydi. Evet, mühür ona çok şey sağlıyordu ama ELİZABETH ZATEN O MÜHRÜ HAK ETMEK İÇİN ÇOK ŞEY YAPMIŞTI. Ama bu kitapta her nasıl olduysa herkes bir anda bütün bunları yok sayıp Elizabeth mührünü kaybedince sanki her şeyini kaybetmiş ve artık güçlü değilmiş gibi davranmaya başladı. Şu an savaştıkları ve yenildikleri neredeyse her şeyle Elizabeth zaten mührünü almadan önce savaşıp, kazandıktan sonra mührünü hak etmişti. Ama bir anda Elizabeth aşırı güçsüz görülmeye başladı. İlk başta Elizabeth ve ben buna çok sinirlensek de sonradan daha sinir bozucu bir şey oldu ve Elizabeth de bunlara inanmaya başladı. KIZIM SEN KENDİNİ GÖRMÜYORSUN GALİBA?
Diğer yandan John... Kendisi ilk kitapta da yan kitaplarda da naif, tatlı, kibar ve mükemmel bir beyefendiydi. Herhangi bir insanın (ya da hortlağın) John'u sevmemesi için bir sebep yoktur diye düşünüyorum. Ama yazar herhalde biraz renk katmak istediğinden ilk başta John'u çekilmez iğrenç bir adama dönüştürüp peşine de resmen kitaptan attı çocuğu, bu da yetmezmiş gibi sonra pat diye tekrar tatlı kibar John haline getirip önümüze koydu. Elizabeth de sanki hiçbir şey olmamış gibi hemen afetti çocuğu. O kadar saçmaydı ki. Bir de Chime, Chime ne oldu o arada? Aşırı saçma bir şekilde girip aşırı saçma bir şekilde çıktı resmen.
Ayrıca kitap boyunca George, Fifer ve şahsi favorim olan Schuyler çok az vardı. Hatta George ve Fifer sanki ayıp olmasın onlarında adı geçsin diye vardı. (Schyuler biraz daha fazla olduğu için mutluyum.) Bunun yanında Keagan ve Gül Cemiyeti neden vardı onu da anlamadım. Sırf bizim tarafta birkaç güçlü büyücü daha olsun diye uydurulup konmuş ve hiçbir backstory'si olmayan bir şeydi. Yani şey demiş gibiydi yazar "Biri bizim kralı hapisten kaçırsın, kim olsun? Buldum Gül Cemiyeti diye bir şeyden bir kız olsun sonra da malum savaş çıkması için Elizabeth'in gidip salak gibi ellerinde olan kılıcı en büyük düşmanlarına teslime etmesi lazım onu da oraya bu kız götürür. Sonra hatta belki savaşta Gül Cemiyeti'ni de savaşa sokar da bizim taraftakiler sanki zaten büyücüler değilmiş gibi birkaç büyücü sokarım savaşa onlardan."
Ve evet Elizabeth'in gidip de kılıcı kaybettiği kısım o kadar manasızdı ki. Daha da manasızı bir anda onu ellerini kollarını sallaya sallaya gelip kurtarmaları oldu. Ya madem şu saraya girmek bu kadar kolay ve sizin gelip de ülkenin en güçlü büyücüsü sizi fark etmeden adam için o an en değerli olan şeyi kaçıracak gücünüz var neden öldürmüyorsunuz adamı?
Ve bu adama madem ülkenin en güçlü büyücüsü yahu salak mı da henüz ergen olan Fifer ve John'un fark ettiği şeyi fark edemeyip de kendi sonunu hazırladı?
Sanki her şey çok normalmiş gibi bir de Caleb'ın ısıtılıp ısıtılıp önümüze konduğu gerçeğini ise tamamen bir kenara bırakıyorum.

This book was so fantastic and enjoyable, loved being with these characters again! Lots of ups, downs, twists and turns, and yeah, a pretty great ending! Can't wait to read more by Virginia Boecker!
I wrote a whole review but it got deleted! In short, solid duology that I've thoroughly enjoyed. Some great characters (Schuyler!), a cool world, bad-ass action, and an ending that I can't really remember, but I think I liked it??
I loved this book it was a very interesting conclusion to a good story that was action-packed from start to finish. I liked the characters, even more, this time other than the little bump in the road of Elizabeth and John's relationship but that was resolved quickly I loved the characters they were interesting. I really enjoyed the story it was so interesting from start there was never a dull moment in it all I really enjoyed reading this book. So overall I loved this book and would read more by this author.

I am being nice and am rounding it up because this series biggest offense in my opinion: It's totally forgettable. It drowns in a sea of kinda okay same same YA fantasy. It's completely unremarkable.
In fact when I started reading King Slayer, I realised that I simply couldn't remember what happened in Witch Hunter. I mean I really couldn't recall ANYTHING. I went and found a spoilered recap- which gave me an idea... But I just couldn't seem to really remember. Now I know I read it a while back and I did read a few hundred novels since, BUT I actually have a really good memory and usually if I can't immediately recall every detail, I still do remember the most important bits... Well, let me tell you, for some odd reason I never did with this series.
And now that I finished it- I think it will drown in the odd corner of the grey unremarkable mass of my old brain. Not that I shall mourn it- because frankly there wasn't much loss.
Let me be fair here, it's not horrible. It has a fair amount of action, its not too shabby written. There was a decent attempt made on the character building. The world building is ok, a lot hypocritical and with not much critical questioning, but I've read worse. There is a whole lot of melodramatics and some romance. So basically what one expects from this kind of a novel.

If I hadn't just started a new job I would have finished this in like 1 day! This duology was so fun to read! This sequel was even better than the first! I laughed, cried, held my breath and ultimately finished this with a smile on my face. I came to love so many of the characters! I highly recommend this!
Satisfying conclusion. That said, this stuffed from being read during assessment week!
