HOW TO FIND A MISSING GIRL • VICTORIA WLOSOK
☆ ☆ ☆ / 5

♥︎ — this was my groupchats book club read this month!

♥︎ — ngl this book to me felt like it was trying to duplicate AGGGTM from the very spot but it went too far at times, like as if the author tried to make iris into pippa??? iris was quite frankly not that great of an ‘amateur detective’ most of the stuff she ‘discovered’ was already laid out for her tbh.

♥︎ — the podcast element of this also felt very unnecessary. none of those podcasts had anything to add to the mystery or to help unravel the puzzle. THE MAIN CHARACTER DIDNT EVEN LISTEN TO THEM UNTIL HALF WAY?? What’s the point in that!!

♥︎ — I don’t wanna be completely negative about this book but i found the pace easy ish to read, i was interested to find out how it would unravel and enjoyed the romance. i do think the author has great potential i would definitely read from this author again. this book felt predictable for me and the ending didn’t shock me!
lighthearted mysterious fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

My thoughts: This was a ‘Girlypops’ bookclub read & I was really excited to start this one, unfortunately for reasons I will state below it really fell short of a book that I can say that I loved and enjoyed.

Firstly, the main character just didn’t gel with me. I found her extremely pretentious, whiny and annoying. I always find it difficult when I struggle to form a connection with the narrative voice and ultimately it brings the book down for me.

There were some parts of the book that were just eye roll moments and just unrealistic in respect of the police investigations. I know that its fiction and so not everything has to make complete sense but I just feel there was a disconnect between a fictional reality and just fiction.

As well as this I didn’t really feel that the podcasts added any substance to the novel and ended up either repeating things we already knew or being explained again later on.

I would like to appreciate that there is important inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community, and I feel this would really appeal and be a good journey into mystery novels for a slightly older teen audience who may be starting out or furthering their reading
funny lighthearted mysterious

thank you to netgalley for this arc!

Iris and her friends run a detectives agency, so when her ex gf goes missing, they decide to investigate. however, she isn’t the first girl in town to go missing, as Iris’s sister disappeared a year ago, and Iris got in legal trouble trying to investigate. can they solve this case before she turns 18 and the consequences get worse?

This book was so hard to put down. i loved the twists in it, how it was hard to guess who really was the killer. i also loved the queer (and particularly sapphic) rep, of which there was a lot.

I highly recommend this to anyone who loved a good girls guide to murder but wished it was gayer!

I called about 90% of it from page 100. I think it was a bit too long and some parts made me consider if i’m too old to still be reading YA. Howeverrrrrrr it was good

they should have stayed missing tbh idk couldn’t care less

Loved this

basically an all inclusive version of AGGGTM. do yourself a favor and skip it.
