I'm not 100% sure why this book is a standalone. Like, yep, I understand that it is the tale of the Queen of Hearts' ascension to the throne, but could that not have been expanded over even a duology? I really loved this book at first, but everything moved too fast and I found the characters to be very underdeveloped. Catherine and Jest were great, but again, too fast. A certain character's death wasn't sad due to lack of background and development. The final few chapters were mainly Catherine being a queen with temper tantrums 24/7. I really wish the whole thing had been spread out over a few books - even just two would have been sufficient to deepen the relationships and elements. I was kind of disappointed because I loved the Lunar Chronicles and was expecting a bit more.

I did not expect to love this as much as I do! The world was very interesting, and overall it was a very cool Queen of Hearts retelling. I liked how other characters from Alice in Wonderland were included while still having their own unique story.
I liked Cath, her transition to the Queen of Hearts felt very well done. I also liked Jest and their relationship developed well.
I was not expecting that ending which I appreciate because at least it wasn’t predictable! 😭
The only negative thing I have t say is that it starts a little slow, but I still read through it quite quickly.

This book is amazing, recommend it to anyone who loves wonderland or a retelling of an origin story of the more evil characters
