you know, i just don’t care for frank mackey the way everyone else seems to

stephen moran is dead boring

and has no one in this series ever HEARD OF A LAWYER?
mysterious slow-paced

I absolutely loved this book and also absolutely hated the way it ended. Not because it was a bad ending-- it was absolutely perfect. Down to the last plot point it was everything I could have wanted. But character wise... I cried like a little baby. I was so attached that by the end when someone is finally pinned with the crime the idea of what the world of the book would be like after it finished was so ferociously sad it was paralyzing. I recommend it, absolutely 100%. Just prepare to get sucked in and never want to leave.

Excellent!

Only thing stopping me from giving this 5 stars was the, OhMyGod, teen talk. Otherwise, French and a boarding school mystery is the perfect combination.

Best of the five Dublin Murder Squad books so far.

3.5 stars. This book takes us into the lives and drama of eight 15-year-old girls at a boarding school. I really enjoy French's books and the investigative processes of her detectives. I also like how there are always unanswered questions because that's life, isn't it? This one is a little different from the others though because
Spoilerthere are some elements of the supernatural
. Was it real? Was it all the girls' imaginations? Who can say?

I didn't like this one as much as The Trespasser by French. Some of the teen girls seemed to be more caricatures. Seeing the first time Conway and Moran work together was helpful. Unsure why there was a bit of paranormal included.

I adore Tana French. Her characters and their interaction, specifically the relationships between the two detectives are always superbly portrayed. From other GR reviews I noticed that this was not anyone's favorite in the series, and I have to agree. There were two things that bugged me - firstly I did not enjoy the count down to the victims death, it just did not feel like it fitted with the rest of the book and secondly, I did not get why Tana brought in the magic element, I don't think it was relevant to the rest of the story. As you can see from my four star rating the above did not hamper my enjoyment of the story in any major way. Growing up in a boarding school myself (not the posh type though), this brought back many memories. I can't wait to read the next in series but will have to pace myself as there is currently only one left.
My favorites: Faithful place and Broken Harbour.

Refreshingly fun for a detective story
