There were a few supernatural-esque elements that I don't love in my murder mysteries, but overall another solid Tana French read.
Takes place in an all girls school. Another good addition to the Dublin Murder Squad. Audio
This book took me forever to read. Not because it was bad, but because it was Tana French and 500 pages. Tana French novels deserve to be read carefully, like a piece of hard candy tucked into your cheek pocket and savored. If you speed through them, you're doing something wrong. French novels are an escape stunt, a journey.
I have enjoyed French's writing and will continue to do so - this book was no exception. I appreciated that this entire book, a huge tome, took place in just 24 hours, interspersed with flashbacks. The short cast of characters felt so real you could reach out and touch them, graze them with your fingertips. I didn't quite expect the ending, though admittedly I wasn't as shocked as I probably should have been.
If you appreciate the finer points and drama of YA literature but also the real-life struggles of "adult" novels, give The Secret Place a try. I'd rank it #2 after In The Woods, personally. And I will pick up book #6 without a doubt.

Yo yes. Yes to all of it. Girl friendships and boarding school and murder and Tana French's story telling. Really really good, hoping Conway is the next on the series list
My least favourite of the Dublin Murder Squad series. An obsequious uninteresting main character. Mean girl stereotypes. Unbelievable motivations. Unnecessary pop culture references. Some deliciously descriptive writing, as I’ve come to expect, but I wanted this story to move along much more quickly. Longest day at school, ever.
Fun! per usual.
Things can feel kind of slow because you get such an in-depth look at the detective work and interviews. But I also like that because any questions about the mysteries are answered and you can try to solve them, too.
I'm reading the series out of order and it was fun to see Conway and Steve meeting for the first time.

Kinda slow paced. I think the entire half with the girls POVs could have been cut out and it would have been a lot more engaging. But very good, well-developed characters and a plot I had to keep reading, even when I was bored.
It dragged a bit in some places, but I still wanted to keep reading. I didn't really see how the supernatural aspect helped the story. It felt out of place and a little awkward.
Not quite up to the level of her other books (teenspeak, why so bad?), but, ugh, Tana French! How do you do the things you do?
