It became clear the Roo was not going to tell Grace and Brochan, two people who were incredibly kind to her, the secret she knew. Because of a pinky promise with the cool female mayor who she has no reason to trust. Miscommunication is one of my least fave tropes and this one promised to be above and beyond, so I bowed out. Plus, as swoon-worthy as Brochan is, I wasn’t feeling any real chemistry.
ok but seriously at 36% Roo learned this wild secret and didn’t turn around and immediately tell Grace and Brochan. Like. In what world is an American chain that’s themed like a Scottish pub a good idea in an actual Scottish town? And where is her loyalty? Miss Mayor seems cool but the man she’s into and the woman she’s living with /making a cookbook with deserved better.

What a fun, totally escapist book! I didn’t realize how little I knew about Scotland before I started this and learning about its beauty and its foods made me enjoy this book even more.
I kept going online and looking up all the lovely places and meals mentioned :)

Ruby decides to make a huge change in her life shortly after turning 35. She’s leaving NYC. She quits her job. And she moves to Scotland, a charming place picked pretty randomly, and will wrote a cookbook.

When she gets to Scotland of course her plans change. She meets a handsome, broody, but ultimately wonderful, man.

She spends her days working in the kitchen of a little tavern that is struggling financially.

She makes friends, family, falls in love and starts to wonder whether this place she’s chosen is the place that’s always been her home.

A very solid romcom that hits all the expected beats, with some heartwarming secondary characters. This one won't surprise you, but it stands out with delicious descriptions of food and whisky. Leaned a bit too much in "Epcot Scotland" for me at times but I understand the appeal of escapism.
