When a parent goes away on a work trip, a child marks the passing of time. A straightforward story of one family navigating very real life told through the eyes of the child with wonderful, evocative illustrations showing a mixed race, same sex couple parenting through a week. Race and sexual orientation are not the topic and are not mentioned, just a simple presentation of one family's experience.

Mama and Mommy and Me in the Middle by Nina LaCour

Representation: Sapphic

Mama and Mommy and Me in the Middle is the story of a little girl who misses her Mommy when she leaves for a week for work. The story illustrates the feeling of missing a parent and the coping skills for dealing with it.

This ALC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

What a fantastic story! I love the idea of showing kids how families come in all shapes and sizes. This book touches on the reality of having a working mom and the sadness felt when they have to travel for work. I absolutely loved this story and the illustrations were amazing! The narrator also does an amazing job at capturing the innocence of the little girl.

A picture book story about missing a parent who's away on a trip for the week.

I love the art of this and the structure of the story- going through the days and what's different about them. I think it would be a little long for a full real aloud but a good book to read with a little bit of an older child especially if they're missing a parent who's away.

The universal experience of a child missing a parent when they are gone, and all of the emotions that go along with that, make this book worthy of sharing. The ability to show the full range of emotions, and embrace them instead of feeling bad about them, is important in SEL lessons. I appreciate that at school she has a diverse group of classmates feeling sad about missing loved ones for various reasons. As always, Kaylani Juanita's illustrations capture so much love and emotion.
