I listened to this book read by the author, and I loved it. By turns the story of grief, euphoric romance, harrowing illness, and healing, it is most of all a book about the power of friendship and love.

This is a good book. Not amazing - like the NYT promised - but solid. It’s a story of incredible love and unimaginable strength in the face of a truly ruthless disease. But, and maybe only because I read this in the middle of awful news stories, it’s also the story of wealth and privilege. The story would start, develop and end very differently if the patient did not have access to a bigger, brighter room (b/c she wanted her husband with her), or the means to fly around the world when she could, or the support of friends in the same demographic. I’m not minimizing Ephron’s experience, but the book left me sad not because of what she endured, but because so few others would every be given the opportunity to.

What an incredible memoir! Nora Ephron's sister Delia shares her journey with grief, finding new love late in life and battling with leukemia. Narrated by the author herself, this was a wonderful listen about a woman grieving for her husband, falling in love again for the first time (and it's such a romantic story!) and then dealing with extreme health crises, involving cancer treatments, near death experiences, blood transplant, depression and finally recovery. Highly recommended and much thanks to Libro.fm for my ALC!

Delia Ephron was already a writer when she began her life and death battle with leukemia, while also marrying again at age 70. It would have been a mess of a melodrama for someone just telling their story, but with Ephron you get her writers perspective. It was delightfully horrible. Horrible, because as Ephron narrates her own book, you are experiencing all the trauma along with her. I wish she could acknowledge God as part of her story, her marriage, her healing. She does not.

What a wonderful book! I heard about it on a couple book podcasts and because of my love for Nora Ephron I decided to give it a listen. It’s a great look inside the mind of a person entering the twilight of their life but full of energy. I’m 52 and I so appreciated reading from this perspective that is closer to me than that of a twenty-something. Delia writes with honesty and emotion. I loved the cast of characters she’s surrounded herself with, especially Peter. I’m so glad I read this book.
